Practical Case in Senegal: How an SME Reduced Its Lighting Bill by 35% in 6 Months Thanks to a Smart Solution

Client : Tertiary sector SME in Dakar (identity anonymized)

The Challenge

This SME occupied office premises of approximately 400 m², including an open space, private offices, meeting room, corridors, and restrooms. The existing installation relied on energy-hungry equipment (fluorescent tubes, halogen bulbs) with no automated control system.

The Domo-Smart Solution

Domo-Smart proposed a three-pronged approach combining relamping, automation, and scheduled control, with a focus on rapid impact and a controlled return on investment.

1. Systematic Replacement with LED Fixtures

All existing fixtures were replaced with high-efficiency LED equipment, selected for their durability and compatibility with detection systems.

  • Immediate 50% to 70% reduction in energy consumption per light point.
  • Significant reduction in maintenance operations thanks to a lifespan up to 10 times longer than traditional neon lights.
  • Improved visual comfort and light quality in workspaces.

2. Implementation of Automation via Motion and Light Sensors

Passive infrared (PIR) motion sensors were installed in all intermittently used areas: corridors, restrooms, and private offices.

  • Lights activate only when motion is detected, with a set switch-off delay after the area is vacated.
  • In the open space, natural light sensors were integrated to automatically adjust artificial lighting intensity according to daylight input (principle of daylight harvesting).
  • This automation optimizes energy use while maintaining consistent comfort levels.

3. Time Scheduling and Usage Scenarios

A simple, robust control system was installed, based on a proven protocol (Zigbee or KNX Easy) to ensure centralized management.

  • Automatic switch-off of all lighting at 8:00 p.m. daily, preventing end-of-day forgetfulness.
  • Definition of specific scenarios according to needs: "meeting", "cleaning", "standby", adapting lighting levels to each situation.
  • This setup allows flexible management of equipment while minimizing energy waste.

The Results

  • Lighting bill reduced by ~35% monthly, from ~250,000 FCFA to ~162,500 FCFA.
  • Estimated annual savings: ~1,050,000 FCFA.
  • Total investment cost (equipment, installation, consulting): 2,800,000 FCFA.
  • Return on Investment (ROI): estimated at around 2.6 years.
  • Improved lighting comfort for employees (quality, uniformity, color temperature).
  • Significant decrease in maintenance interventions (longer LED lifespan, increased reliability).
  • Optimized energy usage through automated lighting management (motion, daylight, scheduled switch-off).
  • Enhanced company image as a modern, energy-conscious player.
